Naturally, the emphasis in the greater Addo region is
on outdoor activities and, in particular game viewing. Some of
the very best game reserves in South Africa are to be found in the
immediate area.
When Addo is mentioned, the Addo Elephant National
Park springs to mind. This long-established park began life
simply as a reserve to protect the handful of Addo elephants then
surviving attempts which had been made to eradicate them.
These days, big things are afoot in the park.
Firstly, it already plays host to the Big Five (lion, leopard,
elephant, rhino and buffalo) as well as large numbers of many other
species indigenous to the area. Secondly, it is in the process
of an expansion process which will finally result in a massive park
and, thirdly, where the park borders Algoa Bay there is being
created a marine reserve in which, inter alia, may be seen the great
white shark and whales (in season), thus completing the "Big Seven"
for Addo.

There is, however, much more to the Addo area that
just the National Park.
Nearby is Shamwari private game reserve. This
20 000 hectare (49 000 acre) reserve has received numerous
international awards, including the World's Leading Conservation
Company and Game Reserve for five consecutive years and is
considered by many to be the best such reserve on the continent.
It is also home to the Big Five as well as numerous other species

Also Close by is Amakhala private game reserve.
This large reserve also plays host to the Big Five among others.
In addition to game drives, you can also take a boat or canoe cruise

Schotia Safaris is the oldest private game viewing
reserve in the Eastern Cape and has over forty mammal species with
about 2 000 specimens. It offers a variety of game viewing

Practically on the doorstep of Enchanted Rock is
Bushman Sands with its varied choice of experiences. For the
golf enthusiast there is their golf course, designed by Gary Player.
